Health Warning: Sunburn will damage and age your skin

Sunburn is a reaction to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The top layers of your skin release chemicals that cause your blood vessels to expand and leak fluids, causing inflammation, pain and redness. Without sun protection factors, UV radiation will immediately start to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin, damaging the skin's cells.

By taking a few simple precautions you can prevent your skin from burning in strong sunlight. To enjoy the sun safely, follow the Cancer Research UK "SunSmart" messages:

S pend time in the shade between 11 and 3
M ake sure you never burn
A im to cover up with a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses
R emember to take extra care with children or if you are pregnant
T hen use factor 15+ or higher

Why factor 15+ sunscreen?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a sunscreen is a measure of its ability to filter out dangerous UVB* rays. The higher the factor the more protection you get from burning. But higher factor sunscreens tend to be more expensive.

The reason experts recommend factor 15, is that this represents the best balance between protection and price. You will get over 90 per cent protection from UVB rays with SPF 15. Above SPF 30 you don't get much additional protection from higher factors. Please note: No sunscreen - no matter how high the factor - can offer 100 per cent protection. Never use sunscreen in order to spend longer in the sun.

*UVB radiation penetrates the top layer of skin and is the main cause of skin tanning and sunburn. UVB = Burning
